HMWSSB disconnects supply as the water bill for 24 lakh not paid

Hyderabad: While the rest of the State was emerged in the festive mood of Ugadi, children of State Home at Yousufguda had to face water crunch as the Hyderabad Metropolitan Water Supply and Sewerage Board (HMWSSB) disconnected the water connection of State Home for non-payment of bills.

The State Home run by the Child Welfare Department has been facing hardship for the last three days to non-availability of water. It has about 700 inmates, including conjoined twins Vaani and Veena and other old age persons and children.

According to sources, the State Home did not pay the water bills for the last four years which amounts to nearly Rs 24 lakh. Though government provides funds to the home for running its various activities including the water and power bills, the officials failed to pay the water bill. Despite serving several notices, the State Home authorities have not responded which consequently led to disconnection of water supply about three days ago, said officials of Water Board.

The issue came to light when the children complained to local MLA Maganti Gopinath while he was attending a private function. They poured out their woes of not being able to take bath and drink water during the last three days. They pleaded with the legislator to arrange tanker for securing water.

He ordered two tankers for the inmates of the State Home. But since it was holiday officials failed to act. However, the MLA assured that the problem would be solved by Thursday.

While, the in-charge of State Home said they have been getting water through tankers and were meeting the needs of the State Home. But the tanker had delivered less water on Tuesday which led to shortage of water on Wednesday, she added.
