Hyderabad: The State government has proposed to accord a top priority for completion of medium irrigation projects in the backdrop of delay in executing major projects because of difficulties in acquiring land.

The Palamuru –Ranga Reddy lift irrigation scheme, Dindi, Kaleshwaram, Tummidihatti, Medigadda, Chanaka Korata and Sita Rama Lift Irrigation works are likely to be put on hold until the land acquisition is completed.

These projects, which have been designed in the united Andhra Pradesh and redesigned by the Telangana State government, have required a large extent of land to be executed.

Top officials of the Irrigation Department told The Hans India that the works on the major projects like Palamuru, Dindi Kaleshwaram and other have not yet begun because of delay in land acquisition.

The Department has furnished all the details regarding the requirement of land to the Revenue Department which is the official agency for land acquisition. The delay in the paying compensation and rehabilitation of the displaced persons has come in the way of land acquisition for months.

In all, between 60,000 and 70,000 acres of land is required to complete the major irrigation projects. So far, 25,000 acres of land has been acquired. In some cases, forest and environmental clearances is necessary.

It may be recalled that the National Green Tribunal (NGT) has stayed the execution of the Palamuru lift projects until environmental clearances are obtained.

It may take 12 to 14 months to complete the land acquisition. Due to delay in the land acquisition, government was able to spend only Rs 9,500 crore out Rs 25,000 crore allocated in 2016-17.

As part of the year-long irrigation programme, Chief Minister K Chandrashekar Rao is likely to pursue the issue of forest clearance for executing the project with the Centre. On the other hand, government decided to complete the works of 36 ongoing projects pending at different stages.

Works at 16 major projects, which includes SRSP stage- 2, Sripadasagar – Yellampalli, Kaleshwaram lift project, Indiramma Sagar, Kalwakurthi, Neettempadu, Bheema and Koilsagar would be put on fast track.

The medium irrigation projects Kinnerasani, Palem, Modikuntavagu, Gollavagu , Ralivagu, Komaram Bheem project and Gaddenna- Suddavagu projects and modernisation projects – Nizam Sagar and Nagarjuna Sagar would be completed by the end of this year, according to officials.

Officials said that budget allocations for each projects in the ensuing 2017-18 would be made depending on the status of the project works.
