Lingampalli: A village of men with mustaches
Lingampalli village of Nagireddypeta mandal in Kamareddy district has a unique distinctive feature cut out from the rest. All the men residing here have grown big mustaches and we do not find even a single man without a mustache.

For them, a mustache symbolizes masculinity and courage. It is prestige issue. Generally, people, especially children, fear men having dreaded mustaches.
In Telugu, they are called meesaala rayullu. Those not having mustaches are equated with women. Not having a mustache is a feminine quality. Men feel that something is missing if they do not have a mustache.
Growing mustaches has a long history as even their great grandfathers used to have dreadful mustaches. It gave them a ferocious look. If men do not have mustaches, they are not allowed to enter into the house.
Speaking to The Hans India here on Monday, one of the village elders Lingaiah said that their mustaches were so popular that they were invited to take part in street plays and dramas. A person with a huge mustache used to command lot of respect in the village and was also feared.
It gives them a sense of pride. Those not having mustaches are considered abnormal and peculiar. Another villager Nagaiah said that when he joined as an agricultural labourer, his boss asked him to remove his mustache immediately without fail.
However, he decided to give up his job and retain his mustache. He said that his mustache was more important to him than his job.
Residents of Lingampalli village will laugh, ridicule and shame all those not having mustaches. They are also forcing their children to grow mustaches.
They contended that even kings and rulers of the ancient and medieval periods had big mustaches. Even to get married, a person has to grow a mustache without fail.
