Hyderabad: The Greater Hyderabad Municipal Corporation (GHMC) decided to construct 20 baby ponds for Ganesh immersion this year and would spend Rs 21.01 crore for the project.

Officials claimed that the construction of baby ponds will be completed by last week of July. They said the tender process has been completed for 16 ponds and the civic body will finalise tenders for the remaining ponds by next week.

According to the data collected from GHMC, the civic body would construct ponds at Pedda-Chinna Cheruvu at an estimated cost of Rs 90 lakh, Pathi Kunta with Rs 1.18 crore, Mir Alam Tank with Rs 1.50 crore, Lingam Cheruvu with Rs 1 crore, Boin Cheruvu with Rs 1crore, Mundla Katwa with Rs 1.08 crore, Nagole Cheruvu with Rs 1 crore, Kotha Cheruvu with Rs 85 lakh, Banda Cheruvu with Rs 80 lakh, Mothukula Cheruvu with Rs 80 lakh, Nalla Cheruvu with Rs 1 crore, Large Tank with Rs 1.50 crore, Patan (Saki) Cheruvu with Rs 90 lakh, Raisamudram with Rs 90 lakh, Kaidamma Kunta with Rs 90 lakh, Gurunath Cheruvu with Rs 90 lakh, Gopi Cheruvu with Rs 90 lakh, Durgam Cheruvu with Rs 90 lakh, Hussain Sagar Lake (Jala Vihar) with Rs 1.65 crore and Hussain Sagar Lake (Ambedkar Nagar) with Rs 1.35 crore.

When queried about the same, a senior GHMC official told The Hans India that the civic body had already finalised tenders for 16 baby ponds and would finalise the remaining by next week.

He said the main concept behind construction of 20 baby ponds at different lakes on pilot basis is to control water pollution and the environment in lakes and also to avoid congestion at one point for pollution free water.

He said the concept was already been taken up by Bengaluru and other cities, keeping in view the importance, the civic body has taken up the innovative concept in hopes of deriving good results for the convenience of the citizens.
