Hyderabad toilet scheme reeks of corruption
The construction of individual toilets under Greater Hyderabad Municipal Corporation (GHMC) limits is allegedly riddled with high level of corruption. Residents including Corporators and Standing committee members allege that ground level civic staff has been demanding higher amounts in order to sanction and allocate individual toilets.

Hyderabad: The construction of individual toilets under Greater Hyderabad Municipal Corporation (GHMC) limits is allegedly riddled with high level of corruption. Residents including Corporators and Standing committee members allege that ground level civic staff has been demanding higher amounts in order to sanction and allocate individual toilets.
According to GHMC official, the civic body had so far received 7,807 Individual Household Latrines (IHHL) applications under Swachh Bharat Mission. The civic body had approved 3,451 applications out of the total received and completed the construction of 554 toilets and another 640 toilets have finished their first phase.
Each individual toilet would cost Rs 12,000 out of which Rs 8,000 is being borne by GHMC and Rs 4,000 is being shared by the Government of India. A three member committee comprising of bill collector, assistant engineer and co-ordinator from urban community development would monitor the construction.
In this context, the GHMC ground level staff has been demanding high amounts from citizens in order to allocate individual toilets. The staff is even demanding bribes after the allocation of funds in two phases (the civic body would release Rs 6,000 for phase I and Rs 6,000 in Phase II).
A standing committee member, on condition of anonymity, told The Hans India that the ground level staff has been demanding Rs 500 for allocation, Rs 500 for release of funds in phase I and Rs 500 for phase II. He said the issue was even taken to the notice of higher authorities in the GHMC but there has been no solution so far.
