Farmers urged to grow crops on demand

Hyderabad: Agriculture Minister Pocharam Srinivas Reddy made a fervent appeal to the farmers to go for sowing seeds based on the market demand, instead of choosing a single or multiple crops expecting to get more yield.Talking to the media at the Secretariat on Monday, Srinivas Reddy refused to repeat his last year suggestion to avoid sowing cotton and take up toor dal, red gram, soya bean, maize and other commercial crops.
He also informed that soon ‘seed melas’ would be organised wherein the farmers can select seed of their choice. The State government will allot Rs 500 crore as revolving funds for the market intervention programme this summer to help the farmers.
Keeping in view the new season fast approaching, he asked the farmers to select the crops that would fetch them better prices based on the market demand. He said besides computerising all details, the Agriculture Department distributed tabs to as many as 3,500 officials, including AEOs and others.
The Minister said they appointed Extension Officers for every 5,000 acres of land to work in close association with the farmers at fields. Necessary suggestions and guidance would be given to the farmers on the need-based farming and cultivation with all details of lands, types of crops, fertilizers, seeds and other inputs used. The details so fed to the tabs would be sent by the AEOs to the central command, he said.
The State government, he said, would release Rs 4,000 per acre for taking up agriculture activities by the farmers. Apart from this, with this App, the government would make necessary arrangements paving smooth sowing of seeds and better cultivation practices. Keeping in view the searing heat of summer, Srinivas Reddy advised the people and the farmers not to dare to come out during the midday hours from 11 am to 5 pm to avoid sunstroke.
Chief Principal Secretary to Agriculture Partha Sarathy, Commissioner of Agriculture Jagan Mohan, chief of Centre for Good Governance N Rajandra and extension officers from all parts of the State were present.
