Hyderabad: If India has to compete with its peers like China, it should compete in healthcare and improve its focus on the healthcare sector, as health is an important factor in country’s development, said Hyderabad MP and MIM chief Asaduddin Owaisi.

Speaking to media persons at Media Plus Auditorium, after releasing Family Health Survey report compiled by Helping Hand Foundation (HHF) in City, he said healthcare is crucial to country’s development and the government should set aside at least 2 to 3% of budget as its health budget.

While referring to the National Family Survey (2015-16), he said that the government should give more focus on healthcare as 46 % of the children were underweight and 48 % were stunted.

“If we are unable to spend at least 2 % of the budget, our health indicators may further drop compared to Sub-Saharan countries,'' he said While referring to the report, Asad pointed out that better infrastructure and services would help benefit more number of people.

He said that his party MLAs would bring pressure on the authorities of Osmania Hospital and Maternity Hospital at Petlaburj to provide better services to patients.

He offered to treat certain critical cases at the Owaisi Hospital and the Princess Asra Hospital, managed by the Owaisi family and to conduct medical camps for patients in near future.

He acknowledged that about 22 % of the families living in the Old City do not have ration cards, which remains a prerequisite to avail certain government schemes under Healthcare.

While emphasising the need for more outlets providing Generic drugs, he said that tablets being used for chronic ailments are available at exorbitant prices and if they are available in Generic drug outlets, the same would cost 40 to 50 % less. “I put forward a proposal for Union government to permit more Generic drug stores in his constituency,” he added.

Responding to questions, he welcomed the State government's initiative of Telangana Minority Residential Schools as they are helpful for poor families among Muslims. However, he said that parents of female students are reluctant to send their daughters to a residential school. That is the reason for hundreds of seats remained vacant.
