Hyderabad: State government has decided to relax the Social Impact Assessment (SIA) rules in order to speed up the urban infrastructure projects like Strategic Road Development Plan (SRDP), 2BHK and others.

The corporation officials claim that SIA has become a herculean task and by relaxing the norms, the existing development projects will be completed in time. The officials claim that the government had started framing the rules and a GO would be released during the week.

SIA is a methodology to review the social effects of infrastructure projects and other development interventions. Although SIA is usually applied to planned interventions, the same technique can be used to evaluate the social impact of unplanned events, for example disasters, demographic change and epidemics. According to new rules, the corporation or concerned department would pay compensation according to the GO released in order to acquire land or property for the projects concerned.

When queried about the same, a senior GHMC official told The Hans India, the SIA had become a major hindrance to projects in the city. He said in order to speed-up the projects and to complete them on time, the government had now decided to relax SIA rules. He said the SIA rules will be relaxed in such a way that the corporation can directly pay compensation to the property owners in order to acquire their properties.

However, the official said, the SIA will be conducted if more than 500 families have to be displaced or a village has to be rehabilitated.

He said such situations are only prevailing in the villages and not in the city. He said in order avoid legal problems the government had been framing rules after obtaining legal opinion from the experts. He also made it clear that the compensation would be paid according to Land Acquisition Act 2013.
