Telangana, Maharashtra, Chhattisgarh bolstering security

Bhupalpally: On the surface it may appear quiet, but underneath it it’s a battle of wits between the State and the outlawed CPI-Maoists.

State government with a skeptical eye on the security of the Kaleshwaram Lift Irrigation Project (KLIP) coming up on the Telangana-Maharashtra border and a stone’s throw away from Chhattisgarh, the hotbed of Maoist insurgency, is leaving no stone unturned in ensuring its smooth construction.

It may be noted here that the barrage works have been in full swing across Godavari near Medigadda, Sundilla and Annaram villages.

Though the Telangana police have a total sway over its territorial jurisdiction, the CPI-Maoist movement in the neighbouring Maharashtra and Chhattisgarh has become a cause of concern for the State government as there is every possibility for the banned outfit members crisscrossing the border to hamper the project works.

Against this backdrop, the State police has been in regular consultation with its counterparts in Maharashtra and Chhattisgarh besides sharing information.

The recent visits of the Chief Secretary of Telangana SP Singh and the DGP Anurag Sharma to Medigadda, Annaram and Sundilla indicate the seriousness of the government over the issue.

The State government, believing that development is the only way to curb the Left Wing Extremism in the region, is also trying to get as much support as possible from the Centre under Left Wing Extremism development funds.

According to sources, the government has asked the Centre to provide at least Rs 50 crore for each Maoist-affected district to carry developmental activity under the integrated action plan (IAP).

On the one hand, the government also sought the Union Home Ministry to beef up security along the shores of Godavari river where a lot of irrigation-related activity is going on.

It’s learnt that the fear of Maoists’ intervention in support of farmers who are losing their land under the project is also one of the major reasons that government wants to beef up the security at the project sites. The construction company is also reportedly raised doubts over their security with the government.

Talking to The Hans India, Bhupalpally Superintendent of Police R Bhaskaran said: “One CRPF battalion each consisting of 120 personnel will come at Ambatipally, nearest village to Medigadda barrage, and Tupakulagudem village where a barrage under JCR Devadula Lift Irrigation Scheme is coming up.”

He said that there was nothing special about the Tuesday’s meeting of top officials of three States held at Medigadda. It’s a routine coordination meeting, he added.

It may be noted here that Maharashtra Additional DGP D Kanakaratnam, Nagpur IG Sharad Shelar, Karimnagar Range DIG C Ravi Varma, Ramagundam Commissioner of Police Vikram Jeet Duggal, SPs R Bhaskaran and Sunpreet Singh were among other officials who met at Medigadda on Tuesday.
