About 6,000 employees of civic body up in arms over officials’ apathy

Hyderabad: About 6,000 outsourcing employees working in the Greater Hyderabad Municipal Corporation (GHMC) have not received their salaries for the month of June.

Sanitation workers who used to receive salaries by fifth of every month have not received salaries yet due to apathy of civic body officials. The outsourcing employees said that the officials and sanitary supervisors delayed the payments claiming technical snag in bio metric attendance systems (machines).

According to a sanitation worker, K Durgaiah (names changed on request), working in Circle 7A of GHMC, says that his thumb impression has not been registered in the newly introduced biometric attendance machines. He said that the sanitary supervisor and local GHMC official claimed that they cannot pay salaries if his thumb impression is not registered.

Echoing her concern, B Janaki working in Circle 8 said, besides salaries, civic body has not been paying EPF to workers since several months.

She said that the sanitary supervisor, who opposed the introduction of biometric attendance system, has deliberately delaying the payments.Due to the delay in salary payment, she says, they have been subjected to untold problems since schools reopened this month.

"We are not able to buy school books and uniforms to our children and we request higher authorities to look into the matter and resolve the issue immediately", Janaki urged.

GHMC Commissioner B Janardhan Reddy told The Hans India that the issue was not brought to his notice. He said that the issue will be resolved in two days and also directed official concerned in this regard.

He also said that GHMC will use Iris ID biometric devices in order to register attendance for such workers who have lighter thumb impressions.
