Hanamkonda: Greater Warangal Municipal Corporation (GWMC) is gearing up to address the water problems like stagnation and flooding at low lying areas in the city during the monsoon.

The Municipal Commissioner Shruti Ojha has directed the engineering wing officials to set up task forces to handle emergency situations in a speedy manner in the case of excessive rainfall. She also asked the officials to set up a control room with four toll free numbers to reach out to the public.

In view of the last years’ experience, where several lowing areas were inundated by rain water, she said the focus should be laid on places that were susceptible to flooding.

She chaired a meeting with the officials of different wings to review the monsoon action plan at the corporation head office in Warangal on Saturday.

The process of desilting the nalas and drains should be expedited. The places where water stagnates have to be identified and measures should be taken to avoid such conditions, she said. Referring to 23rd division, Ojha said as there were no means to let the rain water out, alternate ways to clear the water should be taken.

Municipal health officer B Raja Reddy noted that the silt removed from the drains and nalas was not lifted from the places where desilting was going on and as a result the silt was again moving into the drains and nalas due to the rains; hence steps to lift the silt have to be taken, he suggested.

Responding to his suggestion, the commissioner directed the engineer officials to focus on the issue and shift the silt to a dumping yard. Video record and photos of the process of desilting and lifting the silt should to maintained, she said and asked the MHO not to sign the movement book until the silt was fully removed.

Ojha wanted proceedings prepared on the vigilance of the vehicles. Earth movers and tractors have to be kept ready to address emergency situations and the mobile numbers of the drivers have to be kept available with the concerned officials.
