Vikarabad: The District Civil Supplies Department has dismissed the reports on the plastic rice as false. There are no traces of plastic in the rice analysed at the State Food Laboratory at Nacharam.

However, people have been advised to test the rice at their home using the following simple techniques: If the rice is plastic, when put in glass of water it floats on the water. If it settles down at the bottom, it is confirmed that the rice is not plastic. Similarly, when the rice is boiled if a layer-like substance is formed, then the rice is said to be plastic.

Further, when the rice is put in fire, smell akin to burning of plastic should be felt if the sample is said to be the plastic rice. The last test is non-formation of fungus even if the cooked rice is preserved for three days. The people can send samples to clarify their doubts to the Chief Public Analyst, State Food Laboratory, IDA Nacharam, Hyderabad-500076 by remitting a fee of Rs 200 to get the sample tested.
