Hyderabad: While the city populace rants about the ill maintenance of sewerage lines, especially now due to the monsoons, the Hyderabad Metropolitan Water Supply and Sewerage Board (HMWS&SB) claims to be putting immense efforts in tackling the issue. A senior official from the Water Board said the maintenance process was continuous and lack of public awareness on such issues stood as a major challenge.

Areas like Miyapur, Ameerpet, Punjagutta, Nampally, etc. have been experiencing sewerage water overflowing problems during heavy rains. While the public holds HMWS&SB responsible for the ill maintenance of sewerage lines in the city, a senior official from the water board claimed that the board has been putting immense efforts to improve the conditions of sewerage connections.

He said a total of 600 silt chambers have been constructed recently at commercial complex, restaurants, function halls, etc. across the seven divisions namely Charminar, Asmangadh, Asif Nagar, Red hills, Narayanguda, S R Nagar, Maredpally and L B Nagar.

He said complaints from the consumers are being addressed on a daily basis. “Be it regular complaints chased by the new Jetting machines or the latest 600 silt chambers we have constructed at places across various divisions, we are doing our best to maintain the sewer lines,” he added.

The official said while 40 per cent of the maintenance works, which involves technical issues such as pipeline crossovers or illegal sewerage connections, can be solved by the Water Board, the rest 60 per cent maintenance responsibility is that of the public.

The water board official claimed that most of the garbage which comes out of the sewer lines carries household waste. “It is not only the job of the water board. Public also has a major share of responsibility in the maintenance of the sewer lines,” he said.

The Water Board official further said there has been a 10 per cent improvement in the work efficiency of the board, which is now efficient in following up with the complaints related to overflowing sewerage water issue. He also said there are plans to create awareness in public via brochures, campaigns and personal interactions regarding maintenance and technical assistance.
