Karimnagar: Karimnagar district, which continues to hold the dubious distinction of topping the country in the number of women delivering through ceasarean section (C-section), has also become a hub for pre-natal sex-determination tests leading to rampant sex selective abortions.

The recent raids of the Karimnagar Police Commissionerate’s task force exposed that there are umpteen number of diagnostic centres mushroomed across the city are clandestinely continuing pre natal sex-determination violating the Pre Conception Pre Natal Determination Techniques (Prohibition of Sex Selection) Act, 1994 (PCPNDT).

Since its introduction in the country in the 1970s, sex determination test has become a huge money spinner for the private diagnostic centres.

‘Invest just around Rs 10,000 now, save lakhs of rupees dowry later’, this seems to be the reason behind prospective parents going for the sex determination of the foetus and often leading to selective abortion.

Though PCPNDT Act regulates the use of ultrasonography (USG) machines only by the qualified and registered doctors, the technology is being used liberally by paramedics with the little knowledge they gained working as assistant.

Against this backdrop, the Karimnagar Commissioner of Police VB Kamalasan Reddy, based on a tip-off from credible sources, conducted a decoy operation with the help of a pregnant woman and district medical and health department and caught an unqualified person, running a scanning centre located in Mankammathota, redhanded for conducting gender determination test by charging Rs 8,000.

According to sources, there are quite a few scanning centres running in the city that have no permission or qualified doctors to conduct tests.

It may be noted here that a pregnant woman M Revathi, resident of Ganneruvaram, who approached a clinic in the city for the removal of foetus of girl child, reportedly died while undergoing abortion procedure. Speaking to The Hans India, District Medical and Health Officer A Rajesham said:

“We will take stringent action against those involved in illegal practice of sex determination. The violation of PCPNDT attracts imprisonment up to 3 years and a fine of Rs 10,000.” According to latest figures, child sex ratio (CSR) in Karimnagar district is 946 girls per 1,000 boys, he said.
