Basara: Devotees staged a dharna on Monday in front of Goddess Saraswati temple Executive Officer’s office protesting against taking the processional deity of the Goddess to Devarakonda village in Nalgonda district, crossing the inter-district borders on August 4.

They demanded that the priest be dismissed from service. They wanted a comprehensive probe ordered into the incident.

Meanwhile, the EO served notice on the priest seeking his explanation for taking the processional deity idols to a faraway place without his knowledge.

If the idols were to be carried to a different place, violating the defined route, permission of the prominent seers is also necessary. But without intimating to the EO or taking the seers’ permission, the idols were taken to Devarakonda.

Priest Sanjeev Sharma allegedly took the processional deity to Nalgonda district to perform ‘Aksharabhyasam’ at a private school in Devarakonda of Nalgonda district on last Friday.

When contacted, Sanjeev Sharma admitted having receipt of the notice but denied having taken the idols to Devarakonda. He demanded the temple officials to go through the CCTV footage to confirm the incident.
