Secunderabad: The Secunderabad Cantonment Board (SCB) is building compound walls in parks to protect them from encroachment. In the last eight months, at least three parks in various colonies have got compound walls. In an effort to protect vacant lands in the cantonment, the SCB seems to be going full throttle. The SCB will construct compound walls and handover the parks to the respective colonies for maintenance.
On representations from several Resident Welfare Associations (RWAs), the board decided to develop parks, playgrounds and mini community halls. According to officials, the first priority is to build compound walls and secure the lands and later on to develop them as parks or halls based on the land size and needs of the colony. In all, there are 270 colonies in the cantonment.
Akula Mahender, horticultural in-charge, SCB, said, “In a couple of months, the Triangle Garden near Gunrock Enclave will be ready. It was once a popular park though small in size, but due to drying up of water source it became barren. Now it is being given a red soil topping and the water source is restored.” The Bolarum Garden is ready and has been given a new lease of life and according to officials of the SCB, the Picket Garden, one of the oldest in the cantonment, is going to get a facelift with addition of new plants and landscaping.
Officials say that the Sancharpuri and Bolarum parks are fine examples bringing life into vacant lands. Bharati Estate, Surya Estate, Jayanagar Colony, Indian Airlines Colony, Sri Malani Colony, Ravi Colony and Gruhalakshmi Colony now have parks. Mahender says, “There are a lot of vacant lands and gifted lands in the cantonment but the colony associations need to get proactive and take the lead.”
Private properties come under B2 lands and builders are to give 40 per cent of land to the SCB and develop real estate in the remaining 60 per cent. Recently, a compound wall was built in a land parcel categorised as B4 land measuring close to an acre at Gunrock area. Nirmala, a resident of Gunrock Enclave said, “We had almost lost hope as people had built huts and were staying in the land. By building a boundary wall, it is now secure.” Officials say that they have still not decided if they would convert it into a park. However, there are close to 90 plots that could be converted into plots.
