With nearly one lakh employees in 11,000 branches - 5,000 branches in Telangana and over 6,000 in Andhra Pradesh taking up a strike, banking services suffered a major blow in both the Telugu states.

The day-long strike was called by all unions under the aegis of the United Forum of Bank Unions (UFBU) to protest against the proposed on consolidation move.

Also, if the government doesn't respond to the strike and bring out an action plan in regard to the mounting NPAs, the UFBU have decided to organize a 'March to Parliament' on September 15 which will see participation from one lakh employees.

The other demands include no write-off policy for non-performing assets (NPAs) of corporate loans, criminal action against loan evaders and implementation of recommendations of the parliamentary committee on recovery of NPAs.
