Hyderabad: The Telangana State Board of Intermediate Education (TSBIE) would hold its board meeting on Tuesday, nearly one-and-half-years after its first meeting in the Telangana State.

The Board, comprising Telangana State Council of Higher Education, vice- chancellors of universities, directors of School Education, Technical Education and other officials, would be meeting to discuss the issues of the BIE.

Though the Board has to hold meetings once in three months, the meeting has been avoided on one pretext or the other for the past one-and-half years. It would be the second meeting of the Board after formation of the State of Telangana.

Sources in the BIE said that the officials have deferred the Board meetings for no particular reason. Various important issues have been kept on the back burner, they said. The Board meeting on Tuesday would discuss the finances of the organisation and would examine the revenue and expenditures of TSBIE.

The Board gets revenue from colleges in the form of fees collected for various services like providing affiliations, conducting examinations and others and also in the form of grants received from the State government.

According to the sources, the Board has a revenue gap of about Rs 50 crore per annum. Various fee structures have been kept unchanged for the past few years though there was a huge gap between the revenue and expenditure. The Board has a corpus of Rs 1000 crore and has been meeting revenue deficit through the interest being given on it.

The TSBIE would discuss the rules and regulations being followed in the organisation, services to junior colleges and various types of fee being collected by the Board. The issues of the employees would also be discussed in the meeting.

Providing health cards to the BIE employees has been kept pending for the past few years and the Board meeting would discuss the issue and may take a decision. Salaries of the Board employees who are about 200, would also be taken up for discussion.

The TSBIE may take a decision on granting affiliations to the private junior colleges which has become an issue for the private colleges. Around 372 colleges have been denied affiliation in this academic year and there was a demand to ease the stipulations to provide affiliations.

The Board of Intermediate Education is responsible for the academic activities of about 1500 private and government junior colleges in the state. Granting recognition and affiliation to private junior colleges, finalising the syllabus, conducting exams and implementing the policies of the government are its core activities.
