Ahead of the GST Council Meeting to held in Hyderabad on September 9, Chief Minister K Chandrashekar Rao is likely to meet Prime Minister Narendra Modi in the first week of September in Delhi and make a detailed presentation on the burden of the GST on State projects and its impact on the State’s economy.
Hyderabad: Ahead of the GST Council Meeting to held in Hyderabad on September 9, Chief Minister K Chandrashekar Rao is likely to meet Prime Minister Narendra Modi in the first week of September in Delhi and make a detailed presentation on the burden of the GST on State projects and its impact on the State’s economy.
The Chief Minister’s Office (CMO) had already sent a requisition to the Prime Minister’s Office, seeking Prime Minister Naredra Modi’s appointment ahead of the GST council meeting in Hyderabad.
Top officials said KCR is planning to lead an official delegation to Delhi to apprise the Prime Minister of the impact the GST has the State projects. The State government was demanding that tax on public works be reduced to 5 per cent from 18 per cent increased under the GST regime.
On the insistence of the State government, the Centre agreed to reduce GST on works concerning the project to 12 per cent from 18 per cent. Taking a serious note of the issue, KCR already instructed the departments concerned to prepare detailed reports on the impact of the GST on various projects.
The State government embarked on building the projects at a cost of over Rs 2 lakh crore. They included irrigation projects at the cost of Rs 1 lakh crore, Mission Bhagiratha at Rs 43, 000 crore and the 2 BHK Housing at Rs 18,000 crore.
Preliminary estimates showed that an additional Rs 19,000 crore financial burden would be imposed on the State government because of the GST impact. Sources said the Chief Minister would make a strong case for reduction of tax on public works, including that of roads.
The State government was also demanding reduction in tax slabs on granite and beedi industries. The officials already spoke to their counterparts in Rajastan, Bihar, Jharkhand and Chhattisgarh which also put the same demand.
