Siddipet: The National Service Scheme (NSS) volunteers of Siddipet government Degree College are doing their part in serving the society under the guidance of K Hussain, programme officer of the NSS Unit-II.

The volunteers have not only worked to dig a water harvesting structure, but also built two temporary check dams to prevent soil getting washed away from their college ground.

Three classrooms at the rear side of the campus in the ground floor were kept locked for decades as the rainwater gets accumulated in front of the class rooms.

Several decades ago, there was a system in place to divert this water into a very old well which always used to be full to the brim.

Taking inspiration from the water-harvesting efforts in Ibrahimpur village, Hussain decided to use irrigation technology to not only clear the water accumulation from near the structure, but also to harvest the water so that the water could be used for the college’s needs.

His team worked on restoring the canals and a JCB was used to dig a big farm pond beside the old open well. Water is now flowing directly into the harvesting structure, in addition to the full availability of water in the open well.

Speaking to The Hans India, Hussain said, “We have successfully harvested one crore litres of rain water through our effort this year. We have also asked the contractors, who are building OU PG College hostels and college buildings in the campus to make use of the water as needed,”

He is also planning to use the water from the open well and the harvesting structure to fill an old abandoned overhead tank which is not in use.

The tank is located right beside the open well. It is said that there was a time when water from the borewell was used to provide drinking water to the people of Siddipet.

In addition to digging the canals and water harvesting structure, his team of volunteers had also laid check dams using blocks of granite and sand bags, to prevent water from their college ground from eroding and getting washed away when it rains.

For this effort, not only Hussain, but also K Ram Mohan Rao, Principal of OU PG College, Siddipet, participated in the programme along with the students. The NSS volunteers had previously dug soak-pits at BC, SC and ST welfare hostels.
