Hyderabad: Reacting to the reports that the three decades-old Quli Qutub Shah Urban Development Authority (QQSUDA) would soon be shut down, opposition parties and social groups have raised their voice against such proposals and in support of the body’s existence.

The authority reeling under severe funds crunch for a long time has been dysfunctional and works have not been allocated to the body. Opposition parties demanded the government to focus on strengthening the body and streamline the developmental works under it.

Former chairman of Minorities Commission Abid Rasool Khan expressed his resentment over the closing proposals and said that this body has been diminishing for the past one decade.

He said, “Old city requires a concerted development and the very purpose of establishing QQSUDA was to take up the developmental works on priority basis. If government wanted to revive the body, it can do it and make it function in a way it should be.’’

Old city has its own set of problems, priorities and requirements and the QQSUDA has been available to the people for redressal of their problems. Plans to remove the body indicate negligence towards old city, he added. Majlis Bachao Tahreek (MBT) leader Amjadullah Khan accused the representatives of old city and reiterated that there must be full time administrator for the body.

He said, “It’s a failure of the representatives of Old city. The body is completely neglected since past 10 years and closing it down means throwing the developmental activities in old city to the winds.”

GHMC officials and staff cannot take up the works in the way QQSUDA used to do because it was meant for the specific works in old city, he said.

Former MP Aziz Pasha said that if government has any sincerity towards development of Old city, it must revive and allocate funds for the authority and do some concrete work.

TRS has the majority in municipal body of Twin-cities and it can take bold decisions; but scrapping QQSUDA only shows its insincerity towards Old city, he added.
