Hyderabad: Stray dogs menace in University of Hyderabad (UoH) has put the wildlife on the campus premises in danger. The Wild Lens students group of the university reported on Monday that a wild boar was attacked and killed by street dogs. More than 10 wild boars have been killed in past two months, apart from the 50 deers that were killed in a similar way within the span of one and half year.

“There are about 100 stray dogs in the campus and the number increases as dogs from other areas enter into our compound wall. A wild boar was killed by street dogs in the campus and many such incidents have occurred in the recent past. We only find out about the incidents when we go into the green area for wildlife photo shoot,” said Ravi Jillapalli, founder of the Wild Lens group.

When asked about the safety measures taken by the Greater Hyderabad Municipal Corporation (GHMC), Dr Abdul Wakeel, Assistant Director GHMC (west zone), said, “ We are extensively following the ABC/AR programme (Animal Birth Control/Anti Rabies) and till date we have vaccinated about 80 per cent of the street dogs roaming in and around UoH.”

He further added that the compound wall of the university has many breaches and they should be immediately covered. Also, the management should maintain cleanliness and discourage food littering.
