Hyderabad: In order to encourage stray dog/puppy adoption and to curb growing stray dog menace, Blue Cross Hyderabad chapter organised a meeting at Jubilee Hills office. The Greater Hyderabad Municipal Corporation (GHMC) official present in the meeting said due to the continuous efforts by the civic body the number of dog bites had been reduced to 30,000 from 50,000 since 2004.

Members present in the meeting claimed that instead of killing the stray dogs, the Blue Cross and GHMC are encouraging birth control method. “One pair of breeding stray dogs can give rise to 2,000 puppies in their lifetime. Seeing the increase in the stray dog population, we have raised funds to implement and execute the Animal-Birth Control/Anti-Rabies Vaccine (ABC/ARV) programme in one focused circle in GHMC West Zone,” said Amala Akkineni, Chairperson of Blue Cross.

The ABC/ARV programme targets to vaccine 3000 dogs out of the 3300 breeding dogs in the West zone. It has been noted that only in West and North zones there are around 2 lakh stray dogs.

Dr Abdul Wakeel, Assistant Director GHMC (West zone) said the civic body receives about 150 calls every day regarding the dog menace. Though the number of street dogs is increasing, the GHMC is lacking the manpower to address the issue. It costs around Rs 1,000 per dog for ABC and GHMC is providing it for Rs 125 to Blue Cross. Lack of financial resources is also one of the major reasons for the lack in implementing the programme.
