Hyderabad: The Akshara Jyothi Samithi programme initiated by the State government, to provide basic education to those who have crossed the formal education line, is yet to be fully realised due to lack of textbooks. Even though the classes started from June 2, the Adult Education department is yet to print books for 50,000 students enrolled under Akshara Jyothi Samithi. The Hyderabad Collectorate had sanctioned Rs 37 lakh for the current academic year but the Adult Education department is yet to print books.

According to district authorities, the programme has been implemented in sixteen mandals including,Secunderabad, Nampally, Amberpet, Charminar, Saidabad, Golconda, Asifnagar, Bahadurpura, Marredpally, Khairatabad, Musheerabad, Ameerpet, Himayathnagar, Shaikpet, and Tirumalagiri. However, due to lack of textbooks, the volunteers have started taking classes only in Asifnagar, Saidabad, Marredpally and Musheerabadmandals.

When queried about the same, a senior official in Adult education department said, "We have already started the classes in few areas where the textbooks are available. We are yet to receive books from the press andsince, the District Collector was on leave several things pertaining to printing of books have been delayed.

Akshara Jyothi Samithi is an ongoing programme for fifteen plus age group (non-literates from identified slums in Hyderabad at below poverty line). Under the programme, they are given classes to read and write alphabets and numbers, identify bus numbers, how to operate telephone, and how to sign.
