Hyderabad: Residents in Kukatpally’s Allwyn Colony, abutting Parika Cheruvu, are living on the edge. What seemed as an innocuous dwelling place, it is fast turning into an avoidable near-death trap. Despite warnings from experts, the locality has turned into a dreadful living zone due to apathy of the authorities.

Stinking heaps of froth rise from Parika Cheruvu, which, to make matters worse, gathers industrial effluents from nearby regions. Environmentalists served enough warning signals about the danger that lurks in the corner.

Alas, they all have fallen on deaf ears as no authority has initiated steps to bring respite to the locals.

It blew into a fully-blown catastrophe over the past 48 hours following the downpour that has wreaked havoc in the city.
Residents of Dharani Nagar in Allwyn Colony, not only spent agonizing nights but had to withstand an unbearable smell emanating from the froth.

The heavy rains were so intense that the accumulated foam containing chemical effluents flew into houses with the heavy breeze adding to the problem. Residents, particularly the elders and youngsters have started complaining of breathing problems.

The villain of the piece and one who turned a blind eye to impending dangers, in spite of warnings, are officials from the Hyderabad Metropolitan Water Supply and Sewerage Board (HMWSSB).

Lake protection and water management expert BV Subba Rao opines that the foam is not an overnight development but dates back to those times when, notwithstanding the danger signals, men in authority allowed highly toxic industrial effluents into Parika Cheruvu.

The sewerage flow has increased eight times in the intervening years, he said.

"The froth is because of filamentous blue-green bacteria that can cause life-threatening diseases, including skin infections and respiratory problems.

Sadly, this dangerous combination will flow into Hussain Sagar Lake through the Kukatpally Nala," he points out.

N Raveender, senior environmental scientist with Telangana State Pollution Control Board (TSPCB) said that the Board is planning to use sand bags to decrease the velocity of the Lake.

He also opined that filamentous blue-green bacteria might be the reason for the froth.

He said the PCB has already spilled anti-foaming agents, which will minimise the froth temporarily. He said the PCB will set up sewerage treatment plants (STPs) and other such measures to control the effluents flowing into the lake.

The question why were things allowed to come such a passé and why is it that no one is being blamed for official apathy that is nothing short of criminal negligence? Will they wake up only after deaths are reported from the locality?
