Hyderabad: Over the years, the women employees’ ratio in the IT industry has seen tremendous growth at the entry level, so much so that it is more than 60 per cent. However, as the seniority increases the number plunges to mere 9 per cent.

There are different reasons for this huge women-men ratio gap at the senior level. One of the prime reasons is considered to be that the women employees tend to resign during their mid-career.

According to Ashok Pamidi, senior Director of The National Association of Software and Services Companies (NASSCOM) majority of these resignations are due to pregnancy or marriage. Commenting on the ratio difference in the IT industry, he said that 63 per cent of women are at the entry-level, 27 per cent at manager posts and 9 per cent at the senior level.

“The new amendments made in the maternity act are commendable as they cater to the need of the women employees. Facilities like crèches help getting the women back to work and also benefits the women and child health,” he added.

Bharani Kumar Aroll, Secretary of Society of Cyber Security Council (SCSC), said, “The women ratio in the IT industry significantly reduces as the seniority level increases; project managers, vice presidents or directors. A report claimed that about 55 per cent of the women graduates are not employed today and the major problem is that they are opting out of it.”

He said that once the employee returns from maternity leave, it takes time for them to adapt to the new system as the technology keeps updating at a fast pace, this also cause women to quit the job.

Speaking about the ratio gap, Pravallika, member of Forum of IT professionals, said, “To maintain gender equality in a work place the working conditions should also be made in the favour of women, because women have different issues that should be addressed by the companies. Some companies provide gradual return to work, wherein the employee can work from home for a year after her maternity leave, but there are companies that do not have this facility,” she added.
