Hyderabad: As the Krishna River Management Board (KRMB) has failed to pay heed to the pleas for addressing a plethora of problems persisting between Telangana and Andhra Pradesh. They relate to water sharing and irrigation projects.

Concerned over the “indifferent attitude” by the KRMB, the State government decided to lodge a protest at the Board’s next meeting scheduled to be held on September 12 in the city.

The government took strong exception to KRMB’s unresponsive attitude towards addressing the issues raised by the Telangana State government for the last one year. The government is unhappy that the board has failed to persuade the AP government to release Krishna water from Srisailam reservoir to Nagarjuna Sagar to meet the drinking water needs in the State.

Top officials told The Hans India that the State government on Tuesday requested KRMB for immediate release of two tmcft of water to overcome drinking water crisis. Officials said the government pleaded with AP government to release the water after inflows increased into Srisailam reservoir. With good inflows, water levels in the reservoir had gone up to 804 feet. The existing levels would allow water release to Nagarjuna Sagar from where Telangana State would draw required water. But, the request by the Telangana State government met with a blank response from both the board and AP government.

Officials said the other important issue of installation of telemetry stations to measure drawl of water from Srisailam to Pothireddypadu and Banakacharla head regulators remain unresolved. The TS government has been demanding installation of telemetry station at 600 metres downstream of the Pothireddypadu head regulator.

But, the board in collusion with AP officials changed the station without informing the Telangana State government. The Telangana State government also demanded that the Board restrain AP from releasing excess water from the head regulator. As per the agreement, AP should draw 14,000 cusecs only, but it is releasing more than 40,000 cusecs without any understanding between the two States.

The State government also demanded that the Board stop the construction of Pattiseema and Purushottampatnam irrigation schemes until water allocations from Krishna are finalised between the two States. The plea fell on deaf ears and the AP government took up the works.

Officials said in the next KRMB meeting, the TS government would highlight the Board’s failure in addressing the issues raised by Telangana State and register its strong protest.
