Hyderabad: Eradicating manual scavenging further requires immense awareness among the Water Board workers with regard to the ill effects being caused by it. The Hyderabad Metropolitan Water Supply and Sewerage Board (HMWS&SB) has come up with a 10-day long awareness programme commencing from September 9.

The awareness programme will involve interactions with different levels of sewer staff and their family members on health problems caused by manual scavenging; how the latest technology brought in by the Board can eliminate the intensity.

The campaign will begin with a half-day awareness programme at which the Chief General Managers (CMG) and General Managers (GM) of the engineering department and officials from various divisions of Water Board would address sewerage staff, including contractors’ sewer staff and outsourcing staff.

The CGMs and GMs of various divisions will re-circulate the previous instructions regarding safety measures in case of manual cleaning of sewers, safety kit utilisation and Standard Operating Procedures (SOP) for manhole cleaning during sewerage over flow (SOF). This campaign will be held on 9th, 11thand 12th September.

Following this, a one-week Safety awareness programme on mechanical cleaning will be held from September 13 to September 19. Various engineering managers will meet with resident welfare associations during this period.

This is mainly to educate the colony residents regarding deaths occurring due to manual entry of sewer workers into the manholes. Colony associations will be educated how it will be considered illegal to engage labourers in such activities without following Standard Operating Procedures (SOP) for manhole cleaning during sewerage over flow (SOF).

The third and the final part of the awareness campaign will involve interactions between GMs and sewer staff in their residential locality.

GMs (Engg.) will interact with the sewer staff and their families sensitising them about the risk of death due to entry into manhole and the necessity to use safety equipment. This programm will also be held on September 13.
