Hyderabad: Taking serious note of the complaint lodged by the Telangana government, the Union government has decided to scrap the AK Bajaj Committee constituted to assist the Krishna River Management Board (KRMB) in resolving disputes between Telangana and Andhra Pradesh with regard to the sharing of Krishna waters.

The TS government complained to the Union Ministry of Water Resources that instead of resolving the problems, the Bajaj Committee was adopting ‘double standards’ in addressing the water-sharing issues.

The five-member committee was headed by AK Bajaj, former chairman of the Central Water Commission (CWC). Gopala Krishnan, R P Pandey, Pradeep Shukla and N N Rai are the other members.

After the committee’s visit in February 2017, the Telangana government lodged a strong protest against the committee for demanding the details of minor irrigation projects, particularly Mission Kakatiya, taken up to revive the water bodies and ponds in the state. The government has also argued that minor irrigation does not come under the purview of the Bajaj committee.

Top officials of the Irrigation department told The Hans India that the Union ministry took serious note of the complaint by Telangana government and expressed apprehensions on the functioning the committee for not submitting even a single report with regard to its study on water dispute between the two states.

During the last nine months, the committee visited Telangana and Andhra Pradesh only once and did not call for any meeting in the national capital so far.

The two states locked horns on the utilisation of Krishna waters as the AP government objected to the Palamuru–Ranga Reddy lift Irrigation project in Telangana. The Telangana government strongly opposed the construction of Pattiseema and Purushottapatnam projects without special water allocations by the tribunal.

During the recent visit to Delhi, Irrigation officials informed the Union ministry that the committee did not consider its demand for temporary allocation of Krishna water between the two states as it would take more time for the tribunal to finalize the water allocation permanently.

Sources said the Union ministry had orally informed its decision to wind up the Bajaj Committee for its failure in resolving the contentious water dispute. It is expected that the Union ministry will issue an order to annul the committee by this month end.
