Hyderabad: Finally, the ‘conflict of interest’ caught the TS representative in New Delhi S Venugopala Chary, who is in a similar situation like running with the hares and hunting with the hounds. Chary, who also held the president post of the Hind Mazdoor Sabha (HMS), a major contender in the elections to the recognised trade unions of the Singareni, has been relieved from the post as he remained aloof so that he could avoid poll campaign against the Telangana Boggu Ghani Karmika Sangham (TGBKS), affiliated to the ruling TRS.

This has been on the cards ever since the election for the recognised trade unions of the Singareni Collieries Company Limited (SCCL) was announced. The HMS, which reigned supreme in two of the 11 mining areas in 2012 elections, is one of the major players contesting the polls scheduled for October 5.

The other unions in the poll fray are 2012 winner TGBKS, the AITUC, affiliated to the CPI, and the CITU, a subsidiary of CPI (M). It may be noted here that the AITUC has the backing of INTUC affiliated to the Congress and TNTUC, a subsidiary of the Telugu Desam.

With the D-Day fast approaching, the HMS has come under severe criticism amid the allegations that TGBKS was going full throttle to lure the key leaders of the other trade unions. Chary, who is holding a post in the TRS government, had not participated in the ongoing electioneering though he was at the helm of the affairs of the HMS. Amid mounting criticism over his dual role, the HMS is left to fend for itself.

Speaking to The Hans India, the HMS general secretary Riyazuddin Ahmed said: “After a meeting of the office bearers, the union has removed S Venugopala Chary from the president post. It was an unenviable situation for our trade union and also to Chary, hence this decision was taken.”

Even though the ministers and the legislators are campaigning for the TGBKS, the HMS has a fair chance of winning this election, he said, stating that revival of the dependent employment scheme is their main agenda besides their aim of achieving housing society scheme for the Singareni employees.

CPI State joint secretary Kunamneni Sambasiva Rao who is spearheading the campaign for the AITUC said: “Never before in the history of Singareni polls, no ruling party has deployed so many of its ministers, MPs and legislators to win the trust of the employees. This apart, the Chief Minister K Chandrasekhar Rao himself is reviewing the situation on daily basis.”

Despite the Operation Akarsh launched by the ruling party, the AITUC will win hands down, he asserted, accusing the TGBKS of targeting their leaders especially. In fact, it’s helping the AITUC inversely in igniting the cadres to see the end of TGBKS that achieved nothing for the employees after winning the 2012 election, he said.
