Secunderabad: It comes as a huge relief for motorists in Secunderabad, as the Transport Department has decided to open driving testing tracks and office for carrying out fitness tests in the vicinity.

So far, motorists residing in and around Secunderabad including Lal Bangla, Karkhana, Lalapet, Tarnaka, Tadband and cantonment area had to go all the way to either Nagole or to Kondapur travelling almost 20 km from their residences in heavy traffic for their RTA related works including driving tests and fitness certificates.

The Secunderabad RTO used to have a testing track for light motor vehicles a decade ago but because of negligence resulting in non-maintenance, the premises were unable to cater to the needs of the growing population and resulted in stoppage of tests.

The motorists were later asked to take test either at Nagole or at Kondapur testing tracks, which are already crowded. According to officials, on an average, 11 RTA offices in GHMC limits get about 1,500 to 1,700 applications each per day for learner’s licence and the number has gone up in the recent times. With more number of applicants coming, the waiting time for the slot is more than two weeks.

According to sources, the department has decided to have testing track as well as a fitness centre on a three-acre land at Bowenpally. The land belongs to Marketing Department and the Bowenpally Market Yard is spread across 27 acres.

The department officials had urged the Marketing Department and the response had been positive, said our sources adding that soon the department would enter into an agreement with the Marketing Department and a GO was likely to be issued.

Secunderabad RTO K Venkatramana told The Hans India that they wanted to open up office and also testing tracks with fitness facility. The idea was to provide relief to motorists living in Secunderabad, he said. Auto and Motors Welfare Association general secretary M Dayanand said once the tracks were laid, motorists from Medchal, Alwal, Neredmet, Malkajgiri and other areas would be able to take test and transport vehicles can undergo fitness tests.
