Hyderabad: It will be a big bonanza for washermen and barbers this Diwali. World-renowned branded washing machines, advanced laundry equipment and saloon kits would be distributed to these two communities as part of promoting community-based professions.

Chief Minister K Chandrasekhar Rao had conceived the schemes for these two communities under the most backward communities (MBC) developmental programme. The objective of the supply of modern washing machines and saloon kits is to uplift the living standards of the washermen and barbers.

As per the Sakala Janula Survey (SKS) conducted by the government in 2014, total population of washermen is about 8.7 lakh and the barber community 3.5 lakh.

The file pertaining to the release of Rs 250 crore for each of these two communities is likely to get CM’s nod in two or three days.

A top official of the BC Welfare Department told The Hans India that international manufacturing companies like IFB, White Star, Samsung and Ramson have participated in the bidding for procurement of washing machines, laundry equipment and saloon kits.

Under the scheme, the government will earmark Rs 30 lakh to each group comprising 15 washermen. The total number of registered washermen societies are 2,700 in the state.

The demand for allocation of funds on individual basis is under consideration, said the official.A final decision will be taken after consultion with the Telangana Rajaka Sankshema Sangham. The selected beneficiaries from barber community will get 100 per cent subsidy on the saloon kits.

When asked about the back-end support for maintaining the sophisticated equipment, officials said that the BC welfare department in collaboration with the manufacturers would organise skill development camps for washermen and barber communities on the use of the machinery.

The beneficiaries would also be provided logistic support, including deployment of technicians during installation of the equipment at their workplace.
