Secunderabad: Learning becomes a lot easier for students at schools when teachers opt for live illustrations. Setting standards, the Keyes High School in Secunderabad utilises Solar cells to electrify the school premises and is the only school in the area which functions on solar electricity.

When asked about the motivation behind this, Honorary Secretary of the school K V Padmini told The Hans India, that the whole idea of installing solar cells was to teach the concept of sustainable development to our students, which would in turn reduce the forms of pollution in the environment.”

The Solar cells were installed in the year 2014 by the then Secretary of the school Revathi Thangavelu. The power requirements of the school are managed by these solar batteries and when the charge of the battery is low then a spare generator is kept handy to manage. K V Padmini said, “Ever since these batteries have been installed to regulate the electricity of school, many problems including short circuit and fuse have reduced. The best part is that only 2 per cent of the amount they used to spend earlier comes in form of electricity bill.”

Apart from the electricity in the school, the street lights in the adjoining areas of the school are also managed by these batteries. The batteries are in medium sizes so the accommodation in the school premises has never been a problem, she said and added that there is no sound or any harmful emissions which makes it eco-friendly in school.

The students of standard 6 to 10 are given live demonstrations on the functioning of these solar batteries. Padmini said, “Children have tender minds, if we teach them good they will do good to the society if we teach them bad, they would do bad to the society.

Hence, it becomes our primary duty to teach them constructive aspects of life, which would help them in developing a healthy life and society and propagate the same in future.” Interestingly the power bills too have come down from Rs 30,000/- to Rs 45,000/- per month to Rs 2000, the school authorities said.
