Beena Chintalapuri, Professor of Psychology, formerly Registrar of Osmania University and Head, Department of Psychology, has been conferred “Ashoka Fellowship” award. Ashoka Innovators for the Public is a global association of leading social entrepreneurs. The fellowship is conferred on men and women, with a vision and creativity in introducing new solutions to societal problems.

Hyderabad: Beena Chintalapuri, Professor of Psychology, formerly Registrar of Osmania University and Head, Department of Psychology, has been conferred “Ashoka Fellowship” award. Ashoka Innovators for the Public is a global association of leading social entrepreneurs. The fellowship is conferred on men and women, with a vision and creativity in introducing new solutions to societal problems.

Dr. Beena has been engaged in building institutions from the establishment of a training centre for the counsellors, who dealt with HIV/ AIDS clients under, ‘SAKSHAM-GFATM-7’, at Osmania University.

Establishment of psychological counseling center- SAHAYAM at the University to a large extent serves the campus community by reducing anxiety, depression and of preventing suicides. The center also caters to psychological well-being programme and peace education. Ashoka carefully considered how her ideas and efforts moved through a series of steps towards making a difference in the lives of individuals who were part of the campus community.

She continues to serve as the coordinator of Sahayam Counseling Centre after retirement by extending counseling and training as outreach.

Currently, she is actively involved in bringing about the reformation of Prison inmates under the programme called Unnati- Cognitive Behavioral change. The aim of Unnati is to reduce offending ideas, plans, decisions and behavior in the inmates.

Since, 2015 as part of ‘Mahaparivarthan’, an initiative by DG(Prisons) of Telangana, Mr. VK Singh (IPS) encouraged Unnati enormously.

Dr. Beena has been appointed Nodal Officer for Unnati. The programme is being conducted in eight prisons of Telangana State. Her novel approach to the social problem of crime reduction has already shown successful results in reducing recidivism.
