Hyderabad: Municipal Administration and Urban Development Minister K T Rama Rao on Wednesday said the government will soon form a task force to monitor the situation of city roads.

The task force will suggest solutions to the long-term problem of bad roads in the city and also coordinate the road repair works and take up new projects. The Minister chaired a review meeting at the Water Board office here. He said the department was taking all efforts to improve roads by taking financial assistance from the government.

In the coming days, the government will be spending Rs 20,000 crore only on the roads and hence a decision was taken to form a task force, the Minister added. The members of the task force include Greater Hyderabad Municipal Corporation (GHMC) and Hyderabad Metropolitan Development Authority (HMDA)Commissioners, Managing Directors of Metro Water Works, Metro Rail, TSIIC, Chief City Planner and the Hyderabad Road Development Corporation CEO.

The Minister directed the officials to take up road repairs, which have been damaged due to the heavy rains, on a war foot. Already orders have been issued for taking up repair works to the tune of Rs 77 crore, he added. The officials have identified 350 vulnerable points where the water stagnates resulting in traffic jams. The government will spend Rs 130 crore to lay white tapping roads in these areas, the Minister added.

The Minister said DPRs have been prepared for the projects to be taken up under the Hyderabad Road Development Corporation and asked the officials to call tenders immediately. Apart from these, works to the tune of Rs 1,000 crore will be completed through SRDP within one year. He further said that till now only 50 engineers used to supervise the works, but from now onwards there will be 150 engineers, one per division, to supervise the works.
