Secunderabad: Three days after it stopped functioning, authorities of the Secunderabad Railway Station removed the iconic clock, which was housed on top of the station’s entrance wall, on Thursday and sent it for repair.

The electro-mechanical clock, which was installed atop the railway station by Ramesh Watch Company in 1992, is said to be one of the oldest ones in the city. The clock served as one of the key attractions at the railway station and was looked after by the Signal and Telecommunication wing for the past five years.
However, its maintenance was poor. A source in the railway management revealed that the clock used to stop working every so often and the station officials used to manually set the time. Meanwhile, they continued to neglect its repair. “For the past few days the hands of the clock used to freeze after every three minutes. And it stopped working permanently on Tuesday,” said the source.

When enquired, Venkata Ramana, senior official of the Signal and Telecommunication department said, “Spares for the clock are unavailable and we are in talks with the representative of Ramesh Watch Company about it. We didn’t want to change the clock given the history it carries with it.”

However, it comes as a shock to know that no annual maintenance contract was signed by the maintenance authorities with the company to keep a check on its condition. “It would have cost only Rs 20,000 to Rs 30,000 to repair the clock depending on the scale of damage caused. With the skilled labour that we have, the problem could have been easily nipped in the bud if the government authorities would have intimated us on time,” said Rohit Chugani, the third-generation Executive Director of Ramesh Watch Company.

“The clock, which was installed under the supervision of my uncle Ramesh Chugani runs on a “master-slave” technology. We could have assessed the damage on time and fixed the problem by adding advanced technologies like the GPS to it,” he said. Even as the “clock ticks” on the iconic structure’s repair, an official revealed that a proposal for a new digital clock has been forwarded to the railway authorities.
