Revanth gives up MLA benefits

Hyderabad: Even as the suspense over the submission of resignation letter to Assembly Speaker continues, former Telugu Desam Party (TDP) leader and Kodangal MLA A Revanth Reddy, who recently shifted loyalties to the Congress, has stopped himself availing all facilities and benefits entitled as a legislator in the Telangana Assembly. Revanth informed Assembly Speaker S Madhusudhana Chary that he would not avail monthly salary, allowances and other perks from this month. He also requested the Secretary to cancel the quarters allotted to him at the Old MLA Quarters.
Soon after he joined the Congress in the presence of AICC vice president Rahul Gandhi on October 31, Revanth spoke to the Speaker and requested the latter to stop crediting emoluments into his account. However, it was not clear whether Revanth submitted his request in written to the Speaker.
The Congress leader already met Vikarabad Superintendent of Police (SP) requesting him to withdraw the security provided to him. In a quick reaction, gunmen and a security guard were withdrawn.
Sources said it was a peculiar situation that an MLA requested the Speaker to stop all facilities by continuing the legislator post in the Assembly. The Speaker is understood to be holding consultations with legal experts whether any provisions are existing in the Assembly rules to accept Revanth’s request with immediate effect.
Generally, the legislator would lose all benefits only when he tendered resignation and the same is accepted by the Speaker. In Revanth case, the leader is yet to submit his resignation letter to the Speaker but requested to stop the benefits without quitting the post.
Revanth announced quitting MLA post before joining the Congress last month. He also released the resignation letter in the Speaker format, which was also handed over to TDP national committee president N Chandrababu Naidu, to the media. Neither the TDP forwarded the letter to the Speaker nor Revanth submitted the same in person to the Chair.
