Dalit rights campaigner and writer Kancha Ilaiah was heckled by right-wing activists outside a court in Jagital district’s Korutla town when Telangana police came to his rescue.

According to the reports, a large number of youths holding placards tried to attack Kancha Ilaiah with slippers while others hurled eggs as he was getting into his car.

Speaking to the media on Wednesday, he said that the attack was by people belonging to the Arya Vysya community and the Bharatiya Janata Party, who allegedly told him to chant Vande Mataram if he sought to stay in India.

The writer courted controversy with his book “Samajika Smugglurlu Komatollu" (Vysyas are social smugglers) which led to protests across the two Telugu states of Andhra Pradesh and Telangana with the Arya Vysya associations demanding an apology.
