Warangal: About 20 MBBS students, studying first and second year at Kakatiya Medical College (KMC) in Warangal, were caught violating the institute’s code of discipline and were issued show-cause notices. The students in question were accused of consuming alcohol on the campus and creating a ruckus at the fresher’s block. According to sources, the students celebrated birthday of a second year third semester student, called Shravan, during post mid-night hours of Monday at first year students’ block Hostel 1.

During the early hours of Tuesday, some persons came to KMC campus for morning walk and found the students slept in an inebriated state on the lawn at the hostel block. They suspected that the students might have smoked marijuana (ganja) and alcohol and informed the college principal and the warden.

The college principal and the warden found beer bottles and food items left in the hostel room. It was said that in all 30 students attended the birth day party of which 20 were identified. The KMC Principal Dr V Chandrashekar issued show-cause notices to them and informed the same to their parents.

He said a three-member committee was constituted to probe into matter and to submit the report on December 5, on which a meeting of parents and teachers was scheduled to discuss the issue. Based on the committee report, further action would be initiated.

Dr Chandrashekar denied reports of ganja consumption on the campus. But the students in question were found to have consumed liquor on the ‘alcohol-free campus’ and action would be taken against them.Three security personnel were suspended for allowing the seniors into the juniors’ hostel room during night and also allowing liquor and outside food, which was against rules, he informed.

Responding on the issue, the Police Commissioner G Sudheer Babu said according to the Principal’s version, there was no incident of ganja consumption. However, probe would be taken up if there was any evidence of ganja consumption.
