Hyderabad: TRS MP and Telangana Jagruthi chief K. Kavitha on Tuesday claimed that Telugu poetry in Telangana began more than 100 years before Nannaya's period, who is considered as the first poet in Telugu language.

Addressing a session of Telugu NRIs at Ravindra Bharathi on the last day of World Telugu Conference on Tuesday, Kavitha gave a half-an-hour long power point presentation on the Telugu Classical Language and Literature. She said several coins of third century were found in Kotilingala region which had inscriptions in Telugu language. Similarly, centuries' old Telugu literature was also found in Karimnagar district. Therefore, she said there were many evidences which show that Telangana's Telugu poetry was much older than Nannaya. She also claimed that the word 'Telugu' was first used by poet P. Somanna.

Kavitha said that her organisation Telangana Jagruthi has published several books on Telugu poets and literary personalities of Telangana and they would be distributed among NRIs. She also listed out various measures being taken by TRS Government for promotion of Telugu in the State.
