Warangal: Even though the pollution levels in the tri-cities of Warangal-Hanamkonda-Kazipet are witnessing an alarming increase, the authorities, especially Greater Warangal Municipal Corporation (GWMC), appear to be nonchalant, the Forum for Better Warangal, a citizens’ fora, opined.

Speaking at a meeting here on Wednesday, the Forum president Pulluru Sudhakar expressed concern over the increasing levels of pollution in the GWMC limits. “The city is reeling under very high concentration of particulate matter (PM), which increased significantly over the last couple of years.”

While the permissible limit is 60 micrograms per cubic meter, the particulate matter recorded in the GWMC limits is at 66.5 micrograms per cubic meter, he said. He said the level of particulate matter was at 55 micrograms per cubic meter in 2015.

The particulate matter has the greatest impact on health. It causes lung cancer, chronic obstructive pulmonary (COPD), cardiovascular diseases etc., Sudhakar said, demanding the civic body to take immediate measures to control the pollution. He said that life has become miserable for the denizens due to the particles of dust emanated from the damaged roads coupled with ever increasing vehicular pollution.

He appealed to people to make use of public transportation, besides cycling to keep a tab on air pollution. S Veerabhadrudu, B Raju Yadav, T Damodar Reddy, Venkatram Narsaiah, A Prabhakar Reddy, P Sreenaiah, P Pulla Reddy and T Laxminarayana were present.
