Hyderabad: Road development and connectivity accorded top priority for a second consecutive year, as the State Roads and Buildings Department has big plans laid out to strengthen the road network and achieve 100 per cent road connectivity in the country in the new financial year 2018-19.

The department submitted budget proposals to the State Finance Department seeking nearly Rs 5,000 crore in the new budget. In 2017-18, government earmarked Rs 5,700 crore for road network and other infrastructure projects like construction of integrated collector offices in the new districts and MLA camp offices in every assembly constituency head quarter.

Top officials of Road and Building Department said the department proposed to create strong road networks connecting all habitations in the remote areas and in the agency areas. The department identified many habitations in the backward districts of old Mahbubnagar and Nalgonda and tribal dominated Adilabad and Khammam of not having proper road connectivity. As a result, people do not get access to education, employment and health facilities.

In the new proposals, all the remote habitations will be connected with the nearby Mandal headquarters by laying Block Top (BT) roads. Road networks which were already developed between villages and Mandal headquarters in the present year will be developed as double lane. In 2017-18, double lane road network was developed between all Mandal headquarters for which the government spent nearly Rs 500 crore.

As per the new proposals, officials said the double lane roads will be upgraded as four lane networks between district headquarters in view of the increased vehicle traffic. Rapid urbanisation and fast pace development in the municipalities was one of the main reasons for the improvement of road network. State Finance Department will take a decision on the finalisation of funds for road network at the meeting organised by Chief Minister K Chandrashekar Rao in January end.
