Hyderabad: The Wakf activists have questioned the seriousness of the public representatives in protecting the Wakf properties, as ‘no critical’ questions were raised during the ongoing Assembly session. Let alone the Chief Minister’s hyped previous year's promise of ‘judicial powers’ to Wakf Board, the question of Lanco Hills was forgotten, they felt.

Speaking to The Hans India, Association of Save Wakf Properties general secretary, Syed Ifteqar Hussaini pointed out that questions were being raised about the properties like Hakeem Shah Baba, which have been already encroached upon and constructions have come up all over. Acknowledging that the dargah’s attached property comprised of 343 acres, he said that rather sticking to the already encroached property, they should have raised questions regarding properties like Lanco Hills, which still has huge swathes open land to claim.

“No political party was able to take up these issues in the Assembly session, most of which were actually the poll promises of the Chief Minister. Even the Chairman of Wakf Board Md Saleem, who is also attending the session as one of the MLCs has failed take up the matter,” he lamented.

According to Ifteqar, the Chief Minister K Chandrashekar Rao had made a promise in 2017, during a Assembly session that he would introduce a bill to give judicial powers to the Wakf Board which did not materialise. At least the Chief Minister should be reminded of his promises and the legislators should press for the demand for passing the bill in this Budget session, which would end the land grabbing, he added.

Another Wakf activist, Ghulam Dastagir Khan pointed out that even the public representatives should take up matter, as people have voted them so that they raise important issues of public interest. He pointed out that even the recommendations by the officials were put on the back-burner which is detrimental to the interests of the society at large. He also blamed the members of the existing Wakf Board for their failure to protect Wakf lands.
