Hyderabad: Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) on Wednesday criticised that thousands of farmers were committing suicides as the State government has neglected resolving their issues.

Speaking during the debate on the demands of the agriculture in the Assembly, BJP MLA Ch Ramachandra Reddy said as many as 3,800 farmers committed suicide in the |State. “In such situation how, one can say that Bangaru Telangana has been established?” he asked.

Though the government proposed Rs 4.96 lakh crore budget in last four years only Rs 1860 crore has been spent for the benefit of farmers which is 0.37 per cent. Only Rs 17,000 crores which has been given for crop loan waiver scheme was the big amount given to farmers so far.

Ramachandra Reddy said according to the reports of the National Crime Bureau 3,800 farmers committed suicide, but unconfirmed reports says that the number is about 5000, he added.

The State government failed to provide minimum support price (MSP) to the farmers and the BJP ruled States have given bonus on MSP to them. The growth rate of agriculture in Madhya Pradesh was 24 per cent whereas it was 21 per cent in Telangana, he added.

He wondered why the government was going back in purchasing the farm produce while Centre was ready to bear 40 per cent of the cost. The farmers were not given their pass books as the loan waiver scheme was not completed.

MIM Legislator Pasha Khadri said as the ration cards were not issued, thousands of people were deprived of ration. In the twin cities many were denied ration.

Telugu Desam Legislator R Krishnaiah said unless the production is increased, and remunerative price was not ensured, the farmers will not gain any benefit from cultivation. The government should show interest in providing the MSP to the farmers. It should give importance to research field in agriculture.

The paddy was not provided with good MSP and sugarcane growers were also deprived of it. While Maharashtra has been giving Rs 3,900 per ton, the price in the State was Rs 3,200 per ton.

Krishnaiah pointed out that as the crop loan waiver was not completed most of the farmers were unable to get new loans. The government should take stringent action against the sellers and producers of spurious seed. CPM Legislator S Rajaiah said the cultivation of paddy was going down. He wanted the government to give more commodities through public distribution system.
