Hyderabad: Tension prevailed when scores of Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) leaders and Kisan Morcha activists tried to force their way to reach the Assembly here on Friday. The activists from different districts across the State took out a rally to the Assembly to stage a protest against the State government for failing to address the woes of the farmers in the State.

Party State president Dr K Laxman before his arrest said the government failed to provide the much-needed relief to the farmers in distress. Thousands of farmers have been facing notices from the banks as the State government failed to clear the interest dues under the farm loan waiver scheme.

Similarly, the State government failed to contribute one per cent while the Center had paid three per cent towards clearing the loan interests. This left the farmers in a lurch and bankers threatening to auction their properties, he added.

Laxman criticised the State government for resorting to en masse preventive arrests of the farmers when they wanted to organise peaceful protest to highlight their problems. Lashing at the government, BJP leader G Kishan Reddy said the State had not witnessed such oppression even during the day of separate movement for Telangana.

Party secretary Premender Reddy said about 6,000 farmers have been arrested at various places in the districts across the State while coming to take part in the protest. BJP Mahila Morcha State president Akula Vijaya and other party leaders were arrested near the BJP State Headquarters when they came out of the office and were shifted to Goshamahal police station.
