Hyderabad: The newly-launched Telangana Jana Samithi (TJS) is attracting educated youth into its fold, with thousands of them sending their applications evincing interest in contesting gram panchayat polls.

According to TJS president Prof M Kodandaram, applicants who had completed graduation and post-graduation and mostly under 35 years of age have sent their profiles. As of Wednesday, thousand applications were received.

“The party leadership will meet them through orientation classes on May 27. Most of them are keen on contesting for Sarpanch or for Ward member posts. Highest numbers of applications are from Warangal, Nalgonda and Karimnagar posts,” he said, while addressing a press conference here on Wednesday.

Meanwhile, TJS came down heavily on Telangana government on Centre for Media Studies (CMS) report, which highlighted corruption was ruling the roost in Telangana. They also slammed the government for fuel price hike.

Kodandaram said that general public was facing the burden on petrol and diesel due to high per cent of VAT being collected by State governments even though price of crude oil in international market was decreasing.
“The VAT on petrol and diesel in Telangana is highest compared to Maharashtra, Karnataka and Haryana.

TRS government is getting Rs 200 crore per month on taxes collected on fuel alone,” he said, calling upon the Centre to bring petrol and diesel under Goods and Services Tax to reduce burden on the people. Commenting on Karnataka politics, he said that Supreme Court and media intervention ensured there were no unethical practices to secure power.

When asked whether TJS chief would be seen as kingmaker after 2019 elections, he said that he would aim at king rather than a kingmaker. TJS would contest from all 119 seats without entering into alliance with Congress or any other party, he added.

Meanwhile, making a mention of CMS survey contents earlier, Prof P L Vishweshwar Rao demanded the government to streamline public services and take systemic and specific corrective steps to curb corruption in government offices.
