Hyderabad: Waiver of crop loans, providing input subsidy, supply of free and round-the-clock uninterrupted power supply, construction of godowns and the just-launched Rythu Bandhu scheme taken up by the Telangana government have started yielding good results. With the state government’s constant efforts, the farming sector is gaining due recognition turning it into a profitable profession in the coming days.

The new techniques in increasing agriculture productivity and making available financial resources at the farmers’ doorsteps helped increase farm production and enhanced per capita income.

Telangana is the first state in the country which allocated 26 per cent of the budget for agriculture and allied sectors. During 2018-19, Rs 20,820 crore was allocated. The fund allocation to the farming sector was Rs 7,170 crore more than the previous year in the total budget outlay.

Before the bifurcation of Andhra Pradesh in 2014, the total outlay for the farming sector was mere Rs 4,040 crore under which Telangana share was only Rs 1697 crore.

To address the plight of the farming community permanently, KCR has brought into force Rythu Bandhu scheme under which Rs 8,000 per acre will be given to farmers who own agricultural land every year. The first installment of Rs 4,000 was already disbursed before the beginning of the kharif season. The scheme will benefit more than 58 lakh farmers in the state.

The Agriculture and Marketing department was also accorded top priority as part of strengthening the farming sector. An amount of Rs 500 crore was allocated to the Marketing department to set up godowns, cold storages and strengthen marketing facilities to ensure farmers get profits with good remunerative prices. Measures were also taken to provide minimum support price (MSP) to the farmers.

An amount of Rs 8,000 crore was spent on providing MSP in 2017 and Rs 3,500 crore in 2016. Substantial budget allocations were also made in the current financial year. The Marketing department’s initiative to stabilize the prices of onion and tomatoes was yielding good results.

Farmers were protected from debt-trap by offering remunerative prices to their produce in every harvesting season. The timely supply of fertilizers and seeds to the farmers in kharif and rabi seasons rescued the farmers from the exploitation of the dealers. The government has targeted to supply 5.82 lakh quintals of seeds in this year. About 29.50 MTs of fertilizer is being supplied to farmers. An amount of Rs 138.37 crore has been allocated for the purpose.
