Hyderabad: Mohd Habeeb, who came to RTA office at Tolichowki for inspection of his vehicle, was in a shock after he was handed over a challan of Rs 450 by the traffic police for parking his vehicle on a ‘service road’.

Habeeb came for inspection of his auto-rickshaw at Tolichowki on May 5. He had to park his vehicle in front of the RTA office and had to go for photograph in the office. Habeeb said, when he came out of the office after completing the formalities, he could not find the seat of his auto. Shocked Habeeb was informed that the traffic police had taken away his seat.

He rushed to the Tolichowki traffic police, where he was handed over a challan of Rs 450 for parking on a service road. “When I said that it was not my fault but of RTA, the police advised me to deal with the RTA authorities,” said Habeeb, who paid the money to get back his seat.

He said that because of the traffic police, he could not complete the inspection and had to visit the office next day to complete the transaction by paying a late fee of Rs 200. He alleged that the traffic SI, who took away the seat at 12 noon, handed over it after 3.30 pm.

This is not the case with one RTA office but of many in the city, where there is no proper parking facility. And the worse thing is that, most of these are on rented premises. There are 11 RTA offices in Greater Hyderabad Municipal Corporation (GHMC) limits and many offices do not have proper parking facilities. The RTA offices at Tolichowki, Malakpet, Uppal and Secunderabad lack proper parking spaces.

While Tolichowki and Malakpet RTA offices are on rented premises, the Uppal and Secunderabad are on government land. However, there is no parking facility and the motorists are made to park their vehicles on the road. Even the high security number plates are being fixed on the footpath of the Tolichowki RTA office. Auto Union leaders are up in arms against the government over nonchalant attitude of RTA authorities.

Telangana Auto and Motor Welfare Union general secretary M Dayanand said, “If the road is ‘service road’ then why the RTA authorities are asking the motorists to park their vehicles outside the office? If they can’t provide the facilities, then what is the purpose of having an office?”. He said that authorities who concentrate on getting revenue are failing to provide parking spaces.

Meanwhile, the authorities said that there was no government land available for setting up of office in the city. Though Transport Minister P Mahender Reddy had promised to provide own buildings two years ago, it has not been materialised. The authorities said that recently the Bandlaguda office was shifted to new premises.
