Hyderabad: Former MP Ponnam Prabhakar has entered the race for the post of working president of Telangana Congress as high command is considering his name for the appointment. According to sources, Ponnam may be made one of the three working presidents of the PCC executive to be appointed soon.
The former MP has been taken into consideration for the post as he represents BC community. The high command is working on the new team of the PCC for the past 10 days and experimenting with various combinations of different communities of the State. It wants that the new executive of the PCC to have important leaders of various sections of the society.
According to sources, if party selects a leader of Reddy community as PCC president, then the three working president posts would be given each to BC, SC and someone from the Andhra region. The sources said that present working president Mallu Bhatti Vikramarka might continue in the same post, if he is not considered for the CLP post, while Ponnam would be made second working president and the third post would be given to a leader representing Seemandhra people in Telangana. Though the party considered making Danam Nagendar, who left the party on Saturday, as working president, the idea was dropped, and name of Poonam taken for consideration.
With a view to attract BC voters, the Congress high command is contemplating to accommodate them in key posts. It wants to appease the dominant BC communities like Yadavas, Munnuru Kapus and Gouds. The party has given Hyderabad City Congress president post to former MP M Anjan Kumar Yadav.
A leader from the Munnuru Kapu community might be given position in the All India Congress Committee or in the Congress Working Committee. From the Gouds, Ponnam might be taken as working president.
Party leaders feel that this would settle the question of caste equations in the PCC executive. This combination would address majority of the people and would prepare the party for next elections.
The party may give chairmen posts of various communities to SC and ST leaders. Leaders of other sections would be accommodated in these committees to keep the caste equations in balance.
