Warangal: The National Institute of Technology (NIT), Warangal is to hold a two-day national conference on ‘Evolution of World Class Technical Institutions- Issues and Concerns’, on October 10 -12.

An NIT-W communiqué on Monday said that the institute will be celebrating its year-long Diamond Jubilee events, from October 10 this year to October 10, 2019, marking the completion of the 60 years of its existence.

During the year-long celebrations, the institute has planned to conduct a series of national and international conferences, invited lectures by internationally renowned experts and noble laureates and several other edifying and enriching programmes.

The Diamond Jubilee celebrations will be inaugurated by Vice-President M Venkaiah Naidu on October 8. As a part of the celebrations, the national conference is planned, which will focus on the focal themes like Technical Education Policy, Ranking of HEI (TEI), Accreditation of programmes, Teaching-Learning Process and Research and innovation in Technical Education, it said.

Foundation stone for the institute had been laid by the first Prime Minister of India, Jawaharlal Nehru, on October 10, 1959, and now it has become a leading premier institution of higher technical education.

Also, the institute, which was initially called as Regional Engineering College, was declared as an Institution of National Importance by an act of Parliament. Subsequently, it was renamed as National Institute of Technology (NIT) Warangal in the year 2004.

The NIT has been attracting the best students from all over the country, admitted through a tough Joint Entrance Examination for all the IITs and NITs. Besides, students from almost 40 countries and about 5,500 including 600 international students are on its rolls.

Adding another feather in its cap the institute has been selected for international collaborations at several stages of its existence. It is one of the leading performers under the GIAN (Global Initiative for Academic Network) programme, conducting as many as 58 programmes with internationally renowned resource persons, and the best performer among all the NITs.

Besides, it is ahead of many IITs. The UK-India RECs project was implemented during 1994-98 for developing infrastructure in IT theme. And, the World Bank assisted project TEQIP-I (2004-08), TEQIP-II (2010-14) and TEQIP-III (2017-date) for strengthening postgraduate and research education, is currently in progress.
